National Day of Action 2009

February 14th is traditionally Valentine's Day...for 6 years now though, Girls Action Foundation/Fondation filles d'action has transformed this day into a celebration of the incredible girls and young women across the country who are working for a better world. It's call the National Day of Action!

On February 14th, 2009, Hopewell's Green Goddesses participated in the National Day of Action by addressing the issue of Body Size Acceptance. They created body casts - life sized sculptures of their real bodies!

Images of female bodies are everywhere – we come across hundreds of advertisements each day, selling everything from food to cars. Well-known people in the media and Hollywood community are promoting unrealistic standards of thinness and beauty, and women’s magazines and even respectable newscasts urge individuals to “change” themselves and “take control” of their bodies and health. Women and girls rarely get the chance to show the world what their bodies mean to them, how they love and nurture them, and how they have been affected by all these negative messages. We hope this activity has given our girls a voice in this struggle, and has allowed them to display their own unique thoughts about body and body image.

Congratulations to the Green Goddesses!
